Recently, PMDC has announced that MDCAT Equivalency will be provided for MDCAT 2026. How will this equivalency be calculated? We will discuss this in more detail in the following article.
As per the Pakistan Medical Commission Admissions Regulations 2026, published in June this year, MDCAT will be two subsequent years, i-e, MDCAT 2026 is valid for Admissions in 2026. But this comes with a condition that the equivalency for the previous test will be provided. Now question arises, how can MDCAT equivalency be calculated?
Common sense says that it should be a difficulty index comparison between both the MDCATs. But how difficulty index calculated? The difficulty index given to any question in MDCAT 2026 might be different from the difficulty index given to the same level of question in MDCAT 2026.
How to Calculate MDCAT Equivalency
Normally, when it comes to finding Equivalency, it’s a relative comparison between both the MDCATs. For example
- How many students passed the test last year Vs how many passed this year?
- What are the average marks in MDCAT 2026 vs the average marks in MDCAT 2026?
- Comparisons between the toppers’ marks of MDCAT 2026 and MDCAT 2026.
This way difficulty between two MDCATs can be calculated, and equivalency can be calculated then.As PMDC has already mentioned that MDCAT 2026 is difficult as compared to MDCAT 2026. So this means the higher the marks in MDCAT 2026, the lower they will be compared to 2026. How? Let’s do some math.
Let’s say that after finding the difficulty between both MDCATs reach the point is reached that MDCAT 2026 is 10% difficult than MDCAT 2026. So,10% of 200 = 20 => 20/200 = 0.1Which means there is a 0.1 difference between 1 mark of MDCAT 2023 and MDCAT 2024. So, if can candidate has 170 Marks in MDCAT 2024, 170/1.1 = ~155So according to this Example, MDCAT 2024 170 Marks will be equivalent to 155 Marks.
This is just an example to explain how equivalency calculation works; the difficulty, however, can be different from this example.
Let’s wait for the PMDC MDCAT 2026 gazette to know the exact situation.
